Never wanted it to end! I had no idea women had such a good time heading out West, as of course all we hear about and see in the movies is about the "horrible hardships" and the "terrible Indians" and starvation and drought and death.

While, of course, all this was true and more there were also moments of great courage and great joy. Some of the women, after going back East, they saw the elephant book review, said they actually missed their old life in the West even with the "sacrifices and inconveniences" they had to overcome. This is such a well-researched book with passages coming from actual letters and diaries written in the women's own hand Reading the notes from the author about how and why she ended up writing this book is as interesting as the book itself.

Told in the words of diaries and letters by the women at the time of the California Gold Rush this brings a vivid picture of the life-styles of this rugged time, and the hardships suffered as well as the triumphs.

I was engrossed as have been the friends to whom I have loaned the book a wonderful piece of California history, should be read by everyone who is the least bit interested in this state -- not to mention the many states from which the women traveled. This certainly was. And it's an easy book for reading a few pages at a time, like I do just before going to bed. I love how it organizes the accounts and groups the stories into chapters of a particular theme.

This is an amazing account of the women's experiences from starting the journey to being established in California. The author has taken great pains to document their stories while keeping the reader fascinated. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history. THE ladies WORKED hard.
